The story of how a Vietnamese girl, who was murdered by her neighbors in Thailand, was forced to marry an illegal Vietnamese woman, is making headlines in the United States.
The girl, now 22, was brutally raped and stabbed to death in her apartment in the central city of Phuket in the northern province of Phang Nga.
The crime took place on September 17, 2012.
The murder took place during a party that a Vietnamese man and Vietnamese woman were hosting.
Her parents were reportedly present, but she had fled from the room.
She was then left alone with her attacker in the apartment, who she believed to be her boyfriend, the victim’s brother told Reuters news agency.
He said he was not able to identify her killer.
Police said the victim was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Her body was later found in a ditch outside the apartment building, police said.
The man and woman were arrested on Friday.
Their next court hearing was set for March.
Police told Reuters that the couple were already on probation for other offences.
They had been living in a rented apartment in a Bangkok suburb and had been planning to return to Vietnam after their relationship ended.
The woman was reportedly pregnant with a child at the time of the murder.
